Transition to Kindergarten
Starting school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs orientation and transition activities to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.
Read the Getting ready for primary school guide for detailed tips and checklists.
Before your child starts Kindergarten
Before your child begins, all families please share the following information;
- medical conditions or allergies
- learning support needs
- family circumstances that may affect your child’s start
We want every child to feel safe, supported and included in school life.
Kindergarten orientation and information sessions
Our orientation sessions help children:
- meet teachers and classmates
- explore classrooms and playgrounds
- practise simple routines
Parents and carers join information sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. If you need an interpreter, let us know.

Parent/Carer Information Session: Tuesday 28th April , 2026 at 5:30pm
An information session for parents/carers will be held in the school hall on Tuesday 28th April, 2026 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. The School Principal and Assistant Principal of Kindergarten will present an overview of Niagara Park Public School, the K Start Program and information on school readiness.
K Start
In order to give your child a successful start to school, Niagara Park Public School offers a transition to school program called K Start. The K Start program gives children an early introduction and understanding of life at primary school. Through the program, children will become comfortable in the school setting and will meet some friends whom they will be attending school with in 2027. The K Start groups will be taught by our current Kindergarten teachers.
K Start runs for 6 consecutive Wednesdays starting at 9:15am and ending at 10.45am. There is no cost to attend the program. During the first session on 21st October, 2026 an important information session will be held in the hall for parents/carers from 9:30am to 10:30am followed by a morning tea and an opportunity to mingle with the Principal, Assistant Principal of Kindergarten and other parents/carers. This will be an opportunity to discuss important aspects of school life such as after school care, Canteen, P&C, uniforms, attendance and Library. Please contact the office to enrol in this program and secure your child’s place.
Dates and times for K Start are:
Wednesday 21st October, 2026 - 9:15am to 10:45am (with parent/carer information session and morning tea in the hall from 9:30am to 10:30am)

- dressing themselves and practising hygiene
- following simple routines at home.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
